The Global Health Body Issues Warning Over Severe Scarcity of Weight-Loss Jabs

Less than 10% of individuals eligible to benefit from GLP-1 drugs including Wegovy can access them, caution the global health agency as it issues its first advice on the therapies.

With more than one billion individuals worldwide now living with obesity, it is advocating for broader and more equitable access to GLP-1 medication.

Per projections, more than two billion could be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidance affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be treated with comprehensive and continuous support," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are key hurdles to widespread access to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing substantial body mass, notes the agency.

Even under the current most optimistic outlook, the production of GLP-1 therapies might only reach approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, as stated by the health organization.

The guideline urges nations and manufacturers to expand access, via approaches such as patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the core ingredient of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is due to expire in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Drugs Function

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and increase satiety so individuals reduce food intake.

People typically begin shedding pounds after several weeks of starting on the weekly injections.

Research suggests people may see weight return within a year of stopping the medication, because their normal hunger return.

Being carrying excess weight elevates your chance for experiencing medical conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and certain malignancies.

Obesity affects people in all nations and was linked to over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
