Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress After Wave of Online Abuse Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had come out of the mission, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The group of women also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
