No Fewer Than 6 Perish in Crowd Crush at Ghanaian Armed Forces Enlistment Event
No fewer than 6 individuals have lost their lives amid a crowd crush at a military recruitment gathering held in a stadium in Ghana.
The Wednesday's "devastating" incident appeared to have been caused by "an unexpected surge of candidates who breached security protocols and rushed into the entrances," stated a release from the nation's military.
22 others were injured, including five who remain in critical condition.
A large crowd had turned up at El-Wak stadium, in the main city, the capital, with the aspiration of enlisting in the armed forces.
The country has a youth unemployment rate of about thirty-two percent, the most recent official data indicate, and such enlistment drives typically attract large crowds and frequently result in chaotic scenes.
The closing date to submit applications for this event was prolonged for a seven days to accommodate additional candidates, as a number had experienced difficulties in the process.
Army spokesperson Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin said the stampede occurred ahead of the event's scheduled start of 06:20 GMT.
Ghana's President John Mahama has gone to see the wounded in hospital.
Order has been restored, and the enlistment process has now started.
