An defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to avoid talking about secret matters in all cars.
During a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss secret information while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a issue in every modern vehicles.
Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing threats of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
The revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and cause disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
The wider defence situation highlights the significance of robust measures and vigilance in every areas of government activities, from transport usage to discussions practices.
