An individual earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

One account, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that participants estimated the likelihood of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But these probabilities had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," stated a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other individuals also made large payouts from similar wagers.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A bill presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from elections to political events.

This sector were examined under the last presidential term. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
